2026 College Football Preview: Realignment, New Rules & the Road to Las Vegas

The 2026 Season at a Glance

College football’s most unpredictable era begins August 29. The 12-team College Football Playoff enters year three, the Pac-12 rises from the ashes with Boise State, San Diego State and Texas State, and brand-new rules change how the game is played. With 138 teams, a rebuilt map and a title game in Las Vegas on January 25, here’s everything you need to know before Week 0.

The 2026 NCAA Division I FBS season is the 157th season of college football, featuring 138 teams. The regular season runs from Saturday, August 29 through December 12, with the postseason wrapping up on January 25, 2027 at the College Football Playoff National Championship at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. It’s year three of the expanded 12-team playoff — and the stakes have never been higher.

Realignment: The Pac-12 Is Back

The biggest story of the offseason is the rebirth of the Pac-12. After being gutted in 2024, the conference rebuilt itself with Mountain West and Sun Belt additions, returning to FBS status with exactly eight football members:

  • Joining the Pac-12: Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State (from the Mountain West) and Texas State (from the Sun Belt)
  • Mountain West reloads: UTEP (from Conference USA), Hawai’i as a full member, Northern Illinois as a football-only affiliate, and FCS powerhouse North Dakota State — the 10-time FCS national champions
  • MAC adds: Sacramento State, moving up from the Big Sky
  • Sun Belt adds: Louisiana Tech, which secured its exit from Conference USA after a legal battle

Gonzaga also joins the Pac-12 but doesn’t play football — the conference needed Texas State’s arrival on June 30, 2025 to lock in its FBS status just in time.

New Rules to Know in 2026

The FBS Oversight Committee approved major changes on March 19, 2026 — here’s what will look different this fall:

  • Targeting gets a trial rule: a player’s first targeting penalty no longer carries over to the next game; the second one does, and a third means a one-game suspension
  • Fair catch kick adopted from the NFL — a free kick after a fair catch is now legal
  • Offensive pass interference drops from 15 to 10 yards, mirroring the NFL
  • Two replay challenges per team, with a third available if one is successful
  • Commercial logos on uniforms: teams may add two sponsor logos (up to four inches) on jerseys and one on equipment

Week 0 & Marquee Kickoff Games

The season opens with a bang — and a trip across the Atlantic:

  • August 29 (Week 0): North Carolina vs. TCU at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland — the Aer Lingus College Football Classic on ESPN
  • September 5: Baylor vs. Auburn at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (Aflac Kickoff Game)
  • September 6: Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame at Lambeau Field (Shamrock Series) and Louisville vs. Ole Miss in Nashville (Music City Kickoff)
  • September 19: Arizona State vs. Kansas at Wembley Stadium in London (Union Jack Classic) and West Virginia vs. Virginia in Charlotte (Duke’s Mayo Classic)

Mark your calendar for October 2: Northwestern opens its brand-new Ryan Field against Penn State — the first game in the rebuilt stadium since the original opened in 1926.

The Road to Las Vegas: 12-Team Playoff

Twelve teams will battle through the postseason starting December 12, and it all ends January 25, 2027 with the National Championship at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. With conference realignment reshuffling schedules and new playoff-eligibility rules letting FCS transitions compete in bowls at 6–6, this could be the most wide-open race in CFP history.
