Patriots vs Seahawks: NFL Kickoff Game 2026 Preview — What You Need to Know for September 9
Aug
The wait is finally over. The 2026 NFL season kicks off Wednesday, September 9 at 8:00 PM ET, when the defending Super Bowl LX champion Seattle Seahawks host the New England Patriots in the NFL Kickoff Game — live on NBC and Peacock, with mobile streaming on NFL+. It’s the first real football of the season, and it’s a matchup that already has everyone talking.
Why This Kickoff Game Matters
The Kickoff Game is more than an opener — it’s the league’s official celebration of a new season, complete with the banner-raising ceremony for the defending champions. The Seahawks get to unveil their Super Bowl LX banner in front of a raucous home crowd, while the Patriots walk into the loudest building in the Pacific Northwest with something to prove. It’s the perfect stage for a statement game: can New England’s young core, led by quarterback Drake Maye, hang with the champs on opening night?
The Defending Champions: Seattle Seahawks
Seattle enters 2026 as the team to beat. After a dominant Super Bowl LX run, the Seahawks return with a roster built to defend the title — and they’ll be eager to start fast in front of the 12s. Kickoff night in Seattle is a spectacle on its own: the noise, the sea of blue and green, the banner drop. If you’re a Seahawks fan, this is the moment you’ve been waiting for since February.
New England Patriots: A New Era Begins
For the Patriots, this game is the start of the Drake Maye era in full. The young quarterback showed flashes in 2025, and New England has spent the offseason building around him. Opening against the defending champs on national TV is the ultimate test — and the ultimate opportunity. A win in Seattle would send a message to the entire league that the Patriots are back.
